TANTILLO WANTS STATE AUDIT OF ELLENVILLE RELEASED
Kingston. NY – Ulster County Comptroller candidate Fawn Tantillo is asking State
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli to release the results of a recent audit of the Village of Ellenville before Election Day.“Ulster County taxpayers deserve to have this information
before they vote for Comptroller in November,” Tantillo stated in an open letter to DiNapoli.
State auditors finished their work in Ellenville in February of this year.In response to a Freedom of Information request from Tantillo, a spokesman for the State Comptroller’s Office
wrote, “The audit of the Village of Ellenville is not yet completed;
therefore, records responsive to your request may be withheld in their entirety at this time.”Tantillo
believes this information is vital to voters and notes that State audits of other municipalities completed in February and
March are already available online.“I would hate to think this audit was being withheld deliberately,”
said Tantillo.
Current Ulster County Comptroller Elliot Auerbach
was the Mayor of Ellenville for 3 terms before serving as Ellenville Village Manager and Chief Operating Officer from 2002
to 2007.“Under Auerbach’s leadership, Ellenville gained the dubious distinction of achieving
the highest taxes in UlsterCounty,” Tantillo said.
A 2008 report by the Center for Research, Regional Education and Outreach (CRREO)
at SUNY New Paltz showed that residents of the Village of Ellenville pay the highest property taxes in UlsterCounty. The report states that in general, Ellenville
property owners pay twice as much property tax as others in the county and a whopping 47.8%
more than people in the Town of Wawarsing, where the Village of Ellenville is located.
The Ulster
County Comptroller was created in 2008 and is the chief accounting and auditing officer of the county.“This
is a new position in UlsterCounty,” Tantillo noted, “and many people don’t know what the Comptroller is or does so they don’t
see that more should be done. We can’t let County property taxes run away like they did in Ellenville!”
“Clearly, I
don’t know what the State audit will show,” Tantillo pointed out, “but good or bad, taxpayers deserve the
opportunity to look at the candidate’s record and choose a Comptroller they can trust!”
Obama's remarks drew a prompt response from Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. "President
Obama is wrong," said King, The Associated Press reported. "It is insensitive and uncaring for the Muslim community to build a mosque in the shadow
of ground zero. While the Muslim community has the right to build the mosque, they are abusing that right by needlessly offending
so many people who have suffered so much."
The proposed construction of the Cordoba House Islamic Center has
divided U.S. politicians and the public. Obama's remarks follow a line of argument put forth by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who made an impassioned defense of the construction of the Islamic center in a speech delivered on
Governor's Island.
Politicians such as Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich have opposed the mosque, citing their view that the former site of the World Trade
center is "hallowed ground" and that building Cordoba House in such close proximity is an affront to the memory
of those who died in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
"This is America," Obama declared today,
"and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this
country, and will not be treated differently by their government, is essential to who we are. The writ of our founders must
endure."
New York's Landmarks Preservation Commission has cleared the way for construction of the Islamic
center, which will occupy the site that once housed a Burlington Coat Factory outlet store, but the state's governor, David
Paterson, has suggested that other land might be made available to the developers of the project.

No. 24: End income tax for seniors making less than $50,000
"Will eliminate all income taxation of seniors making less than $50,000 per year. This will
eliminate taxes for 7 million seniors -- saving them an average of $1,400 a year-- and will also mean that 27 million seniors
will not need to file an income tax return at all."
No. 234: Allow five days of public comment before signing bills
To reduce bills rushed through Congress and to the president before the public has the opportunity
to review them, Obama "will not sign any non-emergency bill without giving the American public an opportunity to review
and comment on the White House website for five days."
No. 240: Tougher rules against revolving door for lobbyists and former officials
"No political appointees in an Obama-Biden administration will be permitted to work on regulations
or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior employer for two years. And no political appointee will be
able to lobby the executive branch after leaving government service during the remainder of the administration."
No. 508: Allow penalty-free hardship withdrawals from retirement accounts in
2008 and 2009
"Obama and Biden are calling for legislation that
would allow withdrawals of 15% up to $10,000 from retirement accounts without penalty (although subject to the normal taxes).
This would apply to withdrawals in 2008 (including retroactively) and 2009."
"Two years ago, I criticized the Secretary of State for the firing of U.S. Ambassador to Armenia, John
Evans, after he properly used the term 'genocide' to describe Turkey's slaughter of thousands of Armenians starting in 1915.
... as President I will recognize the Armenian Genocide."
No. 517: Negotiate health care reform in public sessions televised on C-SPAN
To achieve health care reform, "I'm going to have all the negotiations around a big table. We'll
have doctors and nurses and hospital administrators. Insurance companies, drug companies -- they'll get a seat at the table,
they just won't be able to buy every chair. But what we will do is, we'll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that
people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug
companies or the insurance companies. And so, that approach, I think is what is going to allow people to stay involved in
this process."
